For two days the 23rd and 24th of August I was able to drop into a very exciting world by visiting the Gamescom 2018 in Cologne. A convention which is dedicated for companies, developers and us – players of video games of all kinds. Together we shared one purpose the seek of the new which can surprise us and make us craving for more adventures in the virtual world <3.
Enduring hours of waiting we wanted to get just a glimpse of what might be our next passion. But finally – holding the controller in our hands we totally knew that it was worth it 🙂
This is an article describing what my experience of the Gamescom 2018 in Cologne was. Events of such magnitude need for sure hours of planning and many dedicated people which work for it. The things I describe are just a little part of it and the descriptions are limited to my personal view, so if you do not agree or think I missed something important let me know in the comments below 😉 It would be pretty kuhl to hear also other thoughts…
First of all, it was a pretty long car ride for us to get to Cologne. It took us ten hours to our hotel in Siegburg. We needed another twenty minutes to get from our hotel to the convention. But arriving there was sure a pretty awesome feeling ;). Conventional visitors were able to discover 5 areas (halls) on their own. The other halls (in total there are about 10) were reserved for other stuff – like for example the business area.
Every hall had another main topic. There were those which were connected to a company like Microsoft, Sony, … One hall to buy merchandise and other things that will remind you of this vacation your whole life – or for my part buy some surprise boxes which hold nothing but great disappointment… They get me every time 😀
One area dedicated to “for friends & family” which was one of my favorite parts: you did not need to wait for eternity to try out the games there (of course they were not the newest ones). Additionally, they provided a section for retro games (space invaders ftw!) and a cosplay village there.
There was also a section were certain universities and companies could present themselves. Having the purpose of games development in common.
Overall we had two days. One day ticket was about 15,50, which is a pretty accurate and tolerable price considering what you get for it 😉 Although it is to say that we probably paid a little too much for our room because it was kind of a last minute idea to drive to the convention. I would definitely recommend looking for a place for the night earlier if you plan to come to the Gamescom 2019.
How we did it
The things you are able to experience at the Gamescom are various and uncountable. Unfortunately, you have to choose wisely where you want to get in line to try a game. It might be the case that you have to wait for it for hours, so there is no way that you make more than two or three in one day. And besides waiting the whole day isn’t fun but pretty, PRETTY boring!
We had different strategies for the two days we stayed there: The first day we just went through all the different halls to get to know what was there and identify our personal highlights and things we want to really try. It was pretty stressful because there are many people and you get bumped and pushed all the time while you are trying to make your way through the masses of people.
But we made it and after the first day, we knew exactly what we wanted to lay focus on the next day. I HAD to try kingdom hearts 3, so we decided to stay up early and be first in line the next day ;). We experienced some interesting facts. First, there are more people in the early hours of the day than in the evening. My theory is that people simply get tired during the day. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. You simply do not have the energy to stay the full 10 hours…
Additionally and that brings me to the next thing that is good to know the lines for the games close early because otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to let all the people play who got there in time.
Our strategy turned out to be great and worked fine for us 🙂 There is, however, the possibility that you will have to find your own way, for example, if you want to try out games more efficiently than we did 😉 or your stay is simply longer.
The Gamescom 2018 was full of treasurable thoughts, experiences and people.
Game wise my personal highlights were – of course – Kingdom Hearts III, Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed Odyssey. Although it is to say that if you visit the Gamescom you get interested and curious for many different games you didn’t even hear about before.
Although it is pretty crowded the atmosphere is amazing. Seeing all the people connected through one passion and love. The different game stations are decorated with so much passion and inventiveness that you sometimes get stunned when looking at it. Looking at this creativeness you simply want to jump into these worlds and for some degree, you are even able to do so 😉
Not to mention the cosplays you get to see and know on your way through the crowd and especially in the dedicated cosplay village. The air is filled with fun and cheers and maybe sometimes the will to take things not too seriously. We are all gamers… We know how to win and we know how to lose… 😉
Although our planning needs some improvements for the next year, we decided to definitely come back.
I loved the cosplays. Especially the awesome, creative and talented people in the costumes. You can get really enchanted in this world if you want to <3.
Besides trying out different games and buying merchandise the Gamescom was also a great opportunity to improve photographic skills. The people are nice and you do not have to bother much to ask them if you can make a picture of them. That was a great atmosphere and incredibly chilling for photographers due to the fact that the cosplayers actually wanted to pose and get pictures taken.
After the two days, I came to the conclusion that it would have been better to buy tickets for all four days. For me, the time was way too short and I would have been less stressed out not to miss something. You would have the time to simply stop at some parts, enjoy or simply observe.
Finally, you can learn and experience sooo much and as long as you are not bothered too much by huge amounts of people visiting the Gamescom is a great life experience every gamer should make.
